Welcome to Kiel!

The World Boomerang Championships 2016 will be held in Kiel on the Nordmarksportfeld. From July 23rd to July 31st, the World's best boomerang throwers will be "Back in Kiel“ - 14 years after the World Boomerang Championships have been held in the city the first time. The upcoming event will benefit from the same great field, the same accommodation and the same team of organizers, supported by many additional friends of the sport.

Totally free to the public to watch, this rare event will be an exciting demonstration of a trendy but still unrevealed sport with enthusiasts from all over the world. We are expecting competitors from Australia, North- and South America, all across Europe and of course from Japan, the reigning Team World Champion. The competition consists of Team, Individual and Long Distance World Championships and various fun and demonstration events. We are very much looking forward to having the international boomerang family reunited in 2016!
Many happy returns, see you (again) in Kiel!

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Accommodation & Food

What type of food is included in the accommodation package?
The accommodation rates include three meals per day. Breakfast will be served at the youth hostel and consists of standard „european breakfast“ components, such as bread, cheese, jam, cold cuts, warm eggs, scrambled eggs, fruits etc. Lunch will be served at the field and consists of small warm meal, salad and fruits. Fruits and water will be available at the field all day. Dinner will be served at the youth hostel and consists of different basic „european dinner“ style dishes, such as Spaghetti Bolognese, meat stew, Schnitzel, etc. plus salads, fruits and dessert. If you have any special diet needs, let us know in advance and we will try to take care of it.
What kind of room types are available?
Most of the rooms in the Kiel youth hostel are apartment-type units with two bedrooms, each equipped with four beds (bunk beds), and shared sanitary facilities. Like in 2002 we will try to put teams together in such an apartment unit, leaving one unused bed in each bedroom. A number of 2- and 3-bed rooms are also available, we will give priority to couples or attendees with other special needs. Single bedrooms are likely to be very very limited, we can not make any commitments for this type of room at this point. If you have a special request, please let us know in advance and we will try to take care of it! We will handle those requests based on the „first come, first serve“ principle (based on the date of the deposit payment). So make sure to register as soon as possible!
Can I make special room requests?
If you have a special request (e.g. single or double room), please let us know in advance and we will try to take care of it! We will handle those requests based on the „first come, first serve“ principle (based on the date of the deposit payment). Make sure to register as soon as possible!
Can I arrive earlier and stay longer?
Yes, definitely! You just need to select the number of extra nights you need in the registration form. We have reserved beds from Wednesday 20th on, but even if you arrive earlier, that won't be a problem. Just let us know! Register now!
    Will there be WIFI available?
Yes! WIFI will be available in the dining room and most of the public areas at the hostel, however not in the rooms.

    Registration & Costs

Why do I have to pay a deposit until February 29th?
For planning purposed we need to collect a deposit payment from each registered thrower or visitor. If no deposit payment has been received by February 29th, your registration will be canceled - no exceptions, sorry!
Can I pay with credit card?
No. The deposit may be paid by Paypal or SEPA, the remainder may be paid by Paypal, SEPA or cash upon registration on the 22nd of July.
Are there different prices for kids, adults, throwers or visitors?
No, registration costs are the same for kids, adults, throwers and visitors.
I will be staying with my family. How do I register?
You will need to register each individual person separately. Make sure to submit your roommates accordingly during registration. We will try to put you all in one room / suite.
Do teams have to pay a deposit too?
Yes, each team is requested to pay a deposit of 500 € in addition to the individual 150€ deposit of EACH team member. We need to collect this advance payment per team from your country by January. Guenter Moeller is already in contact with all national representatives. But the 500€ is still a deposit and NOT an extra fee. So your personal pro-rata share of this 500€ deposit (i.e. 100€ for a 5-people team) will be deducted from your total registration fee. In any case, if you are going to be on a national team, you need to make sure to pay your personal deposit of 150€ by the end of February AND that your country's representative pays the team deposit of 500€ per team.

    Example:
Max Mustermann wants to throw on his national team, in the individuals and is going to stay for 10 days (22/7 - 1/8). So he would register for the team cup (149€), the individuals (99€), the accommodation package (349€) and the cover charge (29€). His total registration fee is 626€. His national club pays 500€ team deposit, which consists of 5 people. Max himself pays 150€ personal deposit. When Max is showing up in Kiel, his remaining balance is 376€.

    Calculation:
    626€ total registration fee
    -150€ personal deposit
-100€ pro-rata share of his team deposit
    =376€ remainder
How do we pay the 500€ team deposit?
Also be aware of the fact that we ADDITIONALLY to the individual deposit, we need to collect an advance payment of Euro 500,- PER TEAM by February. Make payment to this bank account (If you want to pay in a different way (PayPal etc.), please contact Guenter first):

    Transportation

How do I get to Kiel?
Hamburg is the closest airport and offers a number of direct international connections or connecting flights via Frankfurt. Public transportation offers various options to get to Kiel from Hamburg. Check out checkmybus.com for direct bus transfer from Hamburg Airport to Kiel Central Station or bahn.de for train connections from Hamburg to Kiel (via Hamburg Central Station). If you arrive by car you simply follow highway A7 up north until signs guide you to Kiel by following highway A210. It's about a one hour drive to Kiel from Hamburg, about 5 hours from Cologne, about 9 hours from Munich.
Does the WBC 16 Team offer airport shuttle services?
At this point we can not guarantee that we will be able to pick up everyone from Hamburg airport. However, it is clearly our goal to make it as comfortable as possible for you to get to Kiel. In any case, if you would like to be picked up, let us know your flight details. We will try to confirm, if possible.
Is there a shuttle service to the field?
Like in 2002 we will offer free transportation from the hostel to the field and back. We will drive with a couple of mini vans to make it as flexible as possible. Depending on the final time schedule we will make sure, that the first shuttle services leave the hostel in time for your personal warm up on the field!

    Miscellaneous

Can I get an extra T-Shirt?
Yes, of course! We will be offering WBC 16 shirts during registration.
What types of security do you offer?
Don’t believe every piece of of news. Europe and especially Germany is a very, very safe place. We are not planning with any on top security measures for this event.
Will there be great parties like in 2002?
Of course! There will be parties after the awards, a big BBQ night, the legendary auction and a lot of socializing in the hostel every night!
Can I sell my boomerangs on the field?
General answer is "yes", but please get in contact with the organizers as soon as possible.
    Who has registered so far?
We are still working on a database issue, but will post the registrations as soon as possible.

    Competition

Where can I find the Rulebook?
The IFBA Rules Committee (Lead: Mark Legg/USA) is currently working on an updated version of the official WBC 16 rulebook. A preliminary version can be found on the News Page.
    Rules and Judging Instructions
In Kiel we will set up a "Rules and Judging Instructions" Meeting. This meeting should ensure that all competitors know the event rules and how to judge. In case a competitor does not know the rules, this might cause losing points. In case a competitor does not know how to judge, this might cause in a penalty. Attendence here is mandatory for the teams' Captains plus two other members of that team, but everyone is strongly encouraged to come. Read more about it in Günter's post on the News Page.

    Aesthetics Competition

Will there be an aesthetics competition?
    Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: One of the great traditions of the WBC is it to have an Aesthetics Competition. This means that awards will be given to the boomerang showing highest quality in the divisions / classifications "Mechanical Design", "Decoration", "Craftsmanship" or "Natural Elbow". There will also be a separate category for both throw sticks and boomerang related objects, such as bull roarers, t-shirts, etc.
    How can I enter?
Those wishing to enter items in the competition must be Registered WBC attendees. In the event a group (such as students) wish to enter a collaborative object, one person must be a Registered WBC attendee.
Where can I find an overview of the rules?
The WBC Aesthetic Rules 2016 can be found on the News Page.
Is there a sponsor for this competition?
Yes! The awards for this event will be sponsored by the fine people of the Oscar Cuartas Boomerang Foundation.
